pfsense free internet firewall gateway

it’s been years, since my company has problem with uncontrollable usage of internet, i’ve tried to learn several ways to control that, like bandwidth manager, proxying,  squid firewall, mikrotik, etc. but either they are paid software or i failed to learn how to use it properly.

so while i fiddling with mikrotik, try to put way so the freeware version can be use to control the traffic, but i failed, so i ask around, and luckily my friend dede (a linux-er), point me with this software, a freeBSD based software named pfsense, thing i’ve been looking for this couple of years, it has the characteristic i sought:

– no need paid OS, it is freeBDS man!

– free software, pfsense is under BSD license.

want to know the features? you visit the website:

http://www.pfsense.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=40&Itemid=43

one of the unique thing about this pfsense is that you can run it from the cd and configure it so you needn’t istall it on a computer, this is very cool feature since it also has the option to save the configuration on removable storage, so you’re not stuck on one computer (but i haven’t tried to change computer yet, so it might not be 100% accurate).

and better than mikrotik, if you decide to install it you can partition your hdd as you like (while mikrotik must use the whole hdd).

but there is problem, currently i configure it in hp compact 530sff 2800 mhz, 512 mb ram, 40 gb hdd.

with this configuration, it always hang, even when booting…

of course i use that configuration just for testing, the optimal one should be like this:

ISP1                                                 ISP2

i plan to test this to see if it still hang, hope it will work 🙂

ok, now i have been using it until this april 2010, and i’m satisfied with its performance, the highlight is that it can upgrade its firmware straight from the application (i’m using its web interface to upgrade it to the 1.2.3 release version). and of course we can add packages to the core pfsense online also, so it really help me since i don’t need to bother manually add the additional packages or upgrading the firmware…
for a free firewall it has the ability to face head-to-head with the premium firewall…
